Work, Rest and Play...

Life’s Elements - Postcard Designs

WORK : Three digital photographs containing images of nails stood up on their heads to form a geometric square echoing that of a bed of nails, which may or may not lend itself to the idea that work is perhaps painful in some way or maybe even structured and boring. Moreover, the image of a nail is a link to that of a workman, be it DIY or a professional tradesman. The inscription, ‘But don’t become dull!’ is derived from the saying; ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’.

REST : Three digital photographs of flowers (Aubrietia). Chosen as a theme for rest as so many people enjoy and tend to their gardens for relaxation. Many of us retreat to nature and the countryside for recreational relaxation and rest. There is something about these images that reminded me of the poppy field in ‘The Wizard of Oz’. When Dorothy succumbed to the enchanted pollen and fell asleep. A tenuous link perhaps, but it is where the idea for the inscription, ‘But don’t sleep in!’ came from!

PLAY : Three digital photographs of a children’s climbing frame. I would imagine that all of us have had the pleasure of playing on a children’s playground at some point in our life’s, although in my day they were those horrible concrete ones with the obligatory heavy roundabout that was impossible to stop once in motion. The inscription, ‘But don’t graze your knees!’ is a statement of recognition to just how unforgiving those old playgrounds used to be! The statement also attributes itself to the idea of…play, but don’t play too hard.

The postcard design ‘WORK’ was used by Boomerang Media and distributed around the UK in all kinds of leisure outlets, Bars, Clubs, Cinemas etc.
